Maintenance Helper

Job Summary

The Maintenance Helper operates under the direct supervision of the Facilities Management Heads for campus and residences. The incumbent is responsible for executing entry-level technical and finishing tasks, assisting skilled workers across various disciplines, performing surface preparation and painting for both metal and wooden products, and providing hands-on support for campus operations and event setups.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Technical & Maintenance Support

• Execute foundational technical tasks, including pulling cables, replacing lamps and batteries, installing trunking, drilling anchors, and replacing plumbing fixtures such as hoses, valves, and shower heads.
• Assist electricians, plumbers, welders, carpenters, masons, and painters with day-to-day operations and project execution.
• Support preventive maintenance routines and help inspect the campus regularly to report safety hazards.
• Clean, maintain, and safely operate construction equipment such as cement mixers, vibrators, and jackhammers.

Surface Preparation, Finishing, & Painting

• Execute comprehensive surface preparation (sanding, filling, priming) on wood, drywall, and metal products to ensure smooth, professional finishes.
• Apply protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, or anti-corrosion treatments to metal infrastructure, furniture, and walls across the school and residences.
• Maintain, hang, or adjust classroom and office curtains, blinds, and floor coverings.
• Clear and repair leaky roofs, gutters, and downpipes.

Material Handling, Logistics, & General Operations

• Transport, load, and unload construction materials, furniture, and equipment safely to and from work sites.
• Collect, sort, and properly store leftover project materials from carpentry, welding, plumbing, and electrical workshops for future use.
• Execute digging, trenching, and manual excavation tasks while setting up necessary safety barriers and fences.
• Manage workshop cleanliness, organize tools and equipment, and handle waste removal and incineration.
• Provide active logistical support for school event setup and set-down activities as assigned.

Qualifications Required

• Level 2 Diploma from a recognized TVET college with four (4) years of experience.
• Metal and wood furniture finishing certification/experience preferred.

Abilities and Skills Required

• Basic computer skills.
• Spoken English.
• Physically in good condition.
• Willingness to work extra and odd hours.
