WASH Officer

Job Summary

The WASH Officer will be responsible for implementing Water, Hygiene and Sanitation (WASH) programs in Gambella Region, Luakdong Camp, IDP settlements, and host communities. The role involves monitoring and supervising the construction and rehabilitation of water schemes and sanitation infrastructure, promoting safe water management, latrine use, proper waste disposal, vector control, and environmental health practices. The WASH Officer will also coordinate hygiene promotion activities with government health extension workers, relevant partners, and community stakeholders, and report on program progress to the Regional Coordinator.

Job Description/Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Serve as the focal point person for all activities related to WASH at the respective location.
• Participate in needs assessments, planning, organizing, and implementation of WASH programs in Luakdong Camp.
• Coordinate site location activities, mobilize the community to participate in the rehabilitation and construction of water schemes, promote the use of latrines for defecation, proper waste management at village and household level, and safe water management.
• Participate in assessments and surveys in collaboration with the national WASH teams and other Woreda staff.
• Coordinate with skilled construction laborers to monitor the progress of water schemes and sanitation infrastructure rehabilitation and construction.
• Update the emergency situation in the Woreda on a bi-weekly basis.
• Facilitate work with relevant government sector offices, including water, health, and DPPC, as well as other NGOs and GOs.
• Facilitate the selection, designing, pre-testing, development, dissemination, and evaluation of appropriate hygiene educational materials for effective hygiene promotion programs.
• Facilitate the organization of WASH and hygiene promotion trainings and workshops for water management teams and other partners, including women groups, health agents, and water committees in the Woredas, and coordinate the preparation and organization of all required training materials.
• Facilitate the documentation of health-related data and maintain records of hygiene promotion and sanitation activities.
• Prepare monthly reports and submit them to the supervisor on the progress of hygiene promotion and sanitation activities.
• Participate in other WASH activities as assigned by the supervisor.
• Collaborate with other DPO programs in the target Woreda.
• Represent DPO in the WASH Cluster and other government meetings as a focal point.
• Conduct other tasks as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Education

• BSc or MSc Degree in the area of Environmental Health, Behavioral Science, Health Education and Promotion, or Public Health.

Experience

• At least 3 years of relevant work experience.
