Job Summary The Emergency Response Team (ERT) Officer is a full-time, site-based position at the Kurmuk Gold Mine PLC (a subsidiary of Allied Gold Corp), located in Kurmuk Woreda, Asosa Zone, Benishangul Gumuz, Ethiopia. Operating on a 6-week ON / 2-week OFF Fly-In/Fly-Out (FIFO)
The Emergency Response Team (ERT) Officer is a full-time, site-based position at the Kurmuk Gold Mine PLC (a subsidiary of Allied Gold Corp), located in Kurmuk Woreda, Asosa Zone, Benishangul Gumuz, Ethiopia. Operating on a 6-week ON / 2-week OFF Fly-In/Fly-Out (FIFO) roster, the role ensures round-the-clock emergency readiness, fire suppression, technical rescue (vehicle, rope, water, HAZMAT), and dedicated cyanide emergency response across mine operations. The ERT Officer also handles wildlife/snake relocation, aviation safety inspections at aircraft landing sites, daily equipment maintenance, incident investigations, and delivers safety training and drills.
Key ResponsibilitiesEmergency Response & Rescue Operations
Respond immediately to structural and wildland fire incidents, SCBA operations, medical emergencies, and first aid calls.
Execute specialized rescue operations including motor vehicle extraction, water rescue, rope/high-angle rescue, and Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) containment.
Provide dedicated emergency response during cyanide delivery, mixing, and plant operations; manage chemical spill containment and decontamination.
Fire Prevention, Aviation Safety & Wildlife Control
Perform daily inspections of fire vehicles, water bowsers, alarms, suppression systems, hydrants, evacuation routes, and emergency assembly points.
Conduct pre- and post-landing runway inspections and monitor aviation fire prevention readiness at aircraft landing sites.
Safely capture and relocate snakes and manage wildlife risks to protect mine personnel.
Execute seasonal grassfire and wildland fire prevention programs, including back-burning schedules and perimeter inspections.
Training, Equipment Maintenance & Compliance
Deliver safety toolbox talks, practical fire extinguisher training, and SCBA/cyanide PPE instruction during site inductions.
Clean, test, repair, and maintain emergency response equipment, refilling supplies and recharging power sources after incidents.
Participate in incident investigations, post-incident debriefings, and continuous improvement of site Emergency Response Plans (ERP).
Ensure strict adherence to Ethiopian mining and environmental regulations, safety legislation, and corporate HSE standards.
Diploma or Certificate in Fire & Rescue, Emergency Management, Occupational Health & Safety (OHS), or a related discipline.
Firefighter Certification from a recognized institution (preferred).
Current First Aid Certification.
Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Competency Certification.
Medical fitness clearance determined via a risk-based medical examination.
Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in industrial, mining, oil & gas, aviation, or municipal emergency services.
Direct experience in mine emergency response, HAZMAT management, and cyanide emergency procedures is highly desirable.
Technical Skills: Firefighting techniques, SCBA operations, Incident Command System (ICS), HAZMAT containment, rope/vehicle/water rescue, and emergency vehicle maintenance.
Physical & Mental Attributes: High level of physical fitness, ability to work under high-stress conditions, attention to detail, and active listening.
Licensing & Certifications: Valid driving license (heavy vehicle license is an advantage). Snake handling, aviation firefighting, and technical rescue certifications are strong advantages.
